Getting Know Microneedling

By: Dr. Masoud Esfahani

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that is done as a treatment to make our skin smoother and more toned. Its job is to generate new collagen. Collagen is an important protein substance that is responsible for the elasticity of our skin. The more elastic our skin is, the lesser we are prone to developing wrinkles. In other words, the power of collagen is to maintain our youthful appearance.

Having problems with those unwanted scars and stretch marks? Or maybe your skin doesn’t respond to the usual skin care products that you can buy anywhere. This treatment is then perfect for you. This procedure is also used to reduce the appearance of these unappealing marks.

Understanding the Procedure

Microneedling procedure is a minimal invasive treatment that prompts the skin to release more collagen. It is a dermaroller procedure that pricks the skin using small needles. After the procedure up to a few days, your skin will experience redness and minor irritation. This is done for the skin to produce a new collagen-rich tissue. As a result, the skin will be more toned and firmed.

Before the procedure, it is important for your healthcare provider to know of the medications you are taking or applying. If ever you have had an acne problem for the reason that there are certain acne medications that are contraindicated for the procedure. This procedure is also not allowed for women who are pregnant. It is also contraindicated to people who have skin disease such as psoriasis, eczema and those who have recently undergone some procedures like radiotherapy.

Topical Anesthetic will be used at the beginning to reduce the pain of the procedure. Your healthcare provider will then prick your skin with a small needle using a pen-like tool. No worries about scarring because the needles are too small to see and your healthcare provider will evenly prick the area of treatment to have even results. After the session you may or may not go to your usual routine. You must note that after the treatment your skin is more sensitive to the sun and so sunscreen is necessary. For best results, you may need multiple sessions. Your healthcare provider will present the plan that best suits you.

Risk and Side Effects

Like any other procedures Microneedling is not an exemption to having side effects and risk. One of the side effects is minimal irritation of the treated area after the procedure up to a few days. Redness must be expected too.
