At the Art of Facial Rejuvenation, we are a big endorser of microdermabrasion treatments– especially when combined with our other skin rejuvenation services like botox and dermal fillers – to maximize the youthfulness of our patient’s skin and restore it to its former luster and glow.
Microdermabrasion is a rather primordial procedure that dates back to ancient Egypt, where medical professionals used sandpaper to erode (albeit superficially) a layer of skin to smooth the complexion as a result. This historical concept is still warmly embraced in the 21st century, and rightfully so, with hundreds of thousands procedures carried out annually, making microdermabrasions one of the most sought out beauty regimens in modern day.
Forward to modern day, microdermabrasions are much more modernized, with the application being virtually painless and non-invasive. At the Art of Facial Rejuvenation, we use a Diamond Head microdermabrasion technique, which is an FDA approved method in Canada. One of our medical professionals gently drags the diamond-tip of the wand across the skin, abrading dead skin cells and allowing the new surfaced skin to regenerate and rejuvenate itself. The microdermabrasion diamond tip emits very minute crystals that act as an exfoliate, abrading the outermost layer. This is a deeply exfoliating procedure that leaves the skin soft and firm from the very first session.
Most individuals qualify for a microdermabrasion treatment, including patients suffering from dry and combination skins, and skin types prone to breakouts, white heads and black heads. The physical abrasion of the skin leaves the skin to rejuvenate itself, streaming in an array of collagen fibers that aid with the presence of skin damage, fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, blemishes, dark circles under the eyes, and enlarged pores. In fact, microdermabrasion can help lessen the appearance of acne scars in patients suffering, or having suffered from acne problems and are seeing the remnants in forms of either superficial or medium scars left behind. There are minimal side effects associated with a microdermabrasion treatment. Patients may feel a tightening of the skin, or notice the presence of light flaking. It is therefore advised that patients protect their skin from the sun using a high concentrated sunscreen and moisturizer following the treatment to maximize the results.
Our medical professionals recommend a series of 6 sessions, separated by 3 week intervals to maximize the rejuvenation of the dermis. Furthermore, patients also have the option of alternating between microdermabrasions and chemical peels, incorporating both treatments within their skin care regimen.
