Cosmetic acupuncture is a century old technique that dates back to more than 2,500 years, stemming from a Chinese medical tradition where the insertion of minute needles prompted a free flow of energy through the many areas of the body. Today, acupuncture (also encompassing cosmetic acupuncture) is a recognized and highly practiced form of treatment for both bodily healing and rejuvenation purposes.
For the purpose of rejuvenation and anti-aging, the insertion of very fine, hair-like disposable needles into the different acupuncture points of the face stimulate a flow of collagen and fiber properties, relax the tension of the muscles, and increase the circulation of blood and lympth to the area. The presence of the needles rushes in an array of properties that heal the “injury” and increase nutrient circulation to the skin. In fact, a study done in a 1996 international journal of clinical acupuncture found that among the 300 participants treated with cosmetic acupuncture, 90% of those individuals showed an improvement in the presence of fine lines and wrinkles, skin elasticity and overall quality of their skin.
In a single treatment, a total of 30 to 55 needles may be inserted into the face, some in targeted areas as the frown lines, laugh lines, crows feed and forehead lines. The needles are then left in the superficial layer of the skin for up to 30 minutes, where afterwards the needles are removed and the face is massaged.
Cosmetic Acupuncture is generally a pain-free and relatively relaxing experience. Most patients that have this procedure report feeling no particular sensation. However, depending on each individual’s sensitivity, some may experience a warm sensation, or tingling on the areas of the face that are targeted by the needles.
The results of a cosmetic acupuncture are very effective and subtle. Patients after successive treatments begin to notice a reduction or elimination of their wrinkles and fine lines, a glowing and firmer looking complexion, and an even skin tone. Other improvements in the skin include:
This is a great alternative for individuals who wish to take a more natural and holistic route to their beauty regimen. It is recommended that individuals commit to 10-12 sessions over a period of a year to maximize the benefits that such a traditional form of medicine has to offer.

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medical practice that is based on a philosophy of Ying and Yang, involving the balance and flow of energy. The insertion of needles provides a mechanism for this balance, and through stimulation, it invokes the body’s natural healing responses.
Acupuncture is best used as complementary measure to other treatments. This form of medical practice involves the stimulation of designated points on the body through the use of fine needles. This form of treatment can help individuals that suffer from pain and various health conditions.
On a typical Acupuncture session:
A general outline of the patient’s medical history will be discussed, along with some physical examinations to better understand the health and wellness of the individual. The patient will then lie on the surgical table and the acupuncturists will begin to insert a minute needle into the designated acupoints to stimulate various areas of the body.
Due to the hair-like nature of the needles, a majority of patients feel no or minimal pain or discomfort associated with the procedure. Some may feel a tingling sensation, but nothing too overwhelming that would lead to an uncomfortable experience. In fact, it can be a rather relaxing experience, as the needles are retained in the areas for 30 minutes and then removed.
How many treatments are required?
The number of sessions needed for each patient depends on the individualized case and need. For long term chronic conditions, one to two treatments a week may be required for a few months to help with pain management. For acute conditions, less intervention is required, and 6-8 sessions may be enough to curtail the problem.
For what problem areas is acupuncture appropriate?
Acupuncture has shown prominence is treating a vast array of problems, ranging from musculoskeletal problems (such as neck, back and hip pain) to other issues such as depression, anxiety, nausea and migraines. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) has shown validity in this form of treatment through multiple, vigorous studies.
