Why is Magnesium Important?

Often times, we see advertisements about vitamins and minerals such as vitamin  C, D, A and the most popular mineral- Iron. Like these substances, Magnesium has the same level of importance, in fact, we need about 310 to as much as 420 mg daily, depending on age and gender, to maintain our health. Magnesium is a mineral that has a vital role in our body. It is needed for hundreds of biochemical reactions. The following are just some of the roles and benefits of Magnesium:

  • It maintains normal nerve and muscle function
  • It maintains normal heartbeat
  • It supports our immune system
  • Aids in the production of energy and protein
  • Helps maintain blood glucose level

The amount of magnesium needed of the body depends on age and gender. For adult women, they need about 310 mg of magnesium daily but after the age of 30 it increases to 320. In case of pregnancy the doctor will recommend an extra 40 mg. With regards to men under the age of 31, they need about 400 mg and and increase to 420 for men who are older. For our children, it is best to consult your pediatrician before giving any supplements because it varies from 30 to 410 depending on their age and gender.

It is important to get the right amount of Magnesium daily.
